Back at the lake today. Nora and Everett are convinced that there is a monster that lives and sleeps in the middle. It causes a whirl pool and it will suck you in- if you get to close. 🤷‍♀️😂. I’m going to put my inspiration reference for my sketch book in my stories. #makeart2019 .

One of the big things I’ve learned over the past 2 years of painting almost daily is not to mess with it too much. Seriously, let. It. Be. It will all come together and the natural beauty within you will shine through. You just have to push through the ugly phase and hang tight while you work everything out. There’s so much growth to be had during that phase! Raise your hand if you’re a fellow artist/creative ✋🏼

Throwback to a foxdragon piece I still love. I've not held onto many original illustrations over the years but this one is one I've kept hanging over my workspace as a window into the world that I'm building.⠀

Do you keep the work that you create?

Back to PNW scenes.

I keep saying I’m going to take a break from daily painting, but it hasn’t happened yet. I painted this late last night in my pocket #pentalicaquajournal..

Good morning friends!! What a week it has been pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I have to say that doing it under the IG eye has been a little daunting (or idiotic but I’m not sure which yet). Believe me, I make plenty of ugly things that don’t see the light of day. There’s something in my artist brain that tells me to hold them close and not share that part, but I think it needs to be acknowledged. Not all work is a master piece and that is just part of the process. I wanted to put myself in the photo for reference, so you could see the size and weight that this piece carries. I still have more to add at this point, but here’s what I’ve learned so far: 1. I just don’t like red. I don’t own red or wear red, and I think that is making it harder for me to judge the composition. I like using red as an accent, but not as the dominant color in a piece which is all personal opinion. If red is your color, YEA!! I may just leave all future red paintings to you!! 😂😂😂. 2. I don’t paint abstractly because I can not paint realism. I truly just don’t find painting apples and oranges enjoyable to paint. As a recovering realist who can paint anything and did on & off for years, I was just picking subject matter by the colors I got to play with and not by the thing I was painting. I just decided to get rid of the thing and paint the colors. 3. Even after all these years, I’m reminded how tender and personal my work is, and how hard it is to think of anything else when my painting out in the studio is not in a good place. The creative life is truly all encompassing!! 4. I learned that I can lean on my son, whose favorite color is red, to to play with composition on my iPad. I came up with compositions that I thought would work, and he told me if it was pleasing to a “RED” person. It was a team effort. Thank you all so much for your encouragement along the way!!

If I see a large pocket of open space in my artwork, I get this urge to fill it up. But before I do, I always take a little time out before I add more or cover something up. I look at the rest of the painting and see if it really needs the extra texture or markings. I question if the reason I want to cover it up is just because I’m painting something new that's a little uncomfortable (that’s usually when I’m onto something good). // This original painting is *sold* but prints are available in my shop at JulietteCrane.com.

Little carrot baby. When I make art, I rarely make it in black and white. I love black and white art but the whole idea and science of color has always enamored. Because of that, I’ve just always wanted it present in my artwork. After doing a handful of black and white stippling illustrations the last few weeks , I was itching to incorporate some color into one and here we are. I think I’ll draw a tomato to go with it ☺️🍅.

I love the process of making these pieces. There is just something about taking a clean new piece of wood and creating a patina of age. It makes me think of FaceApp and the pics of beautiful babies with instant wrinkles.
I finished this piece yesterday. It is another from my Copper Patina series. Swipe to see full image.
