No, it is not out of focus. It was painted that way. And it is also not a portrait. Most likely this is a ‘tronie’. It was a genre in painting of exaggerated faces or expressions. Some painters excelled at these and would therefore sell a lot of them. This one is by Frans Hals who used them to exhibit his seemingly quick and virtuoso touch. Collectors loved these, just for the way the paint was applied. And when you zoom in you can see why. It is such a joy to stand very close to this little painting and study every stroke of the brush, and imagine you can find out just how he did it.

He is not laughing, and he is not a cavalier. But other than that it is a fitting title for this painting. The name ‘The Laughing Cavalier’ was not given to it by Frans Hals but was used centuries later in a catalogue of the Royal Academy. In Hals’ days nobody bothered with titles for paintings. This one was probably known by the name of the man portrayed. Unfortunately we don’t know his name anymore (although some good suggestions have been put forward). If you look closely at his face you will see he is not laughing but smiling. His moustache seems to exaggerate it. And he is not wearing a suit that would identify him as a soldier in particular. But while you are looking closer note how wonderfully brilliant it is painted. Just look at the silk embroidery on his sleeve or the lace on his collar or cuffs. In places the lace looks as though he painted it with quick strokes. Also, it was painted from a low viewpoint. That is because portraits were usually hung high on the wall. You are supposed to look up to it.

Sartle has such a great website about art history! They just featured a few of my blog post about Rubens, Renoir, and Hals. I recommend checking out their site!

‘The Laughing Cavalier’, 1624 by Frans Hals, (1582-1666) is a portrait of the Dutch ‘Golden Age’ now in the Wallace Collection in London. It’s commonly regarded as one of best Baroque portraits ever painted, but the title is a Victorian invention that stems from a public viewing which took place at Bethnal Green Museum in 1872–75, immediately after its arrival in England. It was a huge hit with the public and it was regularly reproduced as a print. It became one of the best known Old Master paintings in the country. The sitter is unknown and he’s not in fact laughing, but he has a saucy, enigmatic smile. The brushwork is vigorous and dynamic. Although it appears that Hals painted it briskly, in fact each dart-like stroke was carefully considered and thoughtfully added to the canvas. It’s a tour de force of a painting!!.

http://www.silver.ru/events/Rembrandtizolotoyvekgollandskoyzhivopisi/

These were always in demand. Most Dutch cities had a civic guard in the 17th century. Their duties varied somewhat from place to place, but at the very least they formed a militia that would help protect the city in case of war. This was a part time military service that often lasted for three years. Burghers were often proud to be part of these militia. The ranks of the officers often corresponded with their families standing in the community. Their was also a social element to these groups. They would often eat and drink together. In Haarlem, where this was painted, it became customary to have a banquet at the end of the three year service and have a painting made of the event. So you can imagine that quite a few of these so called ‘Schutterstukken’ were made. Each member would sit with Frans Hals individually and leave the clothing they wanted to be portrayed in behind. Usually, there would be a list of their names added to the painting. Sometimes it was made part of the picture-frame, but still it can be difficult to make out who is who. That is why sometimes they were given a subtle number. They are easy to overlook, but if you search for them you are sure to find them.

A visit to the Frans Hals Museum never disappoints. Yesterday I reacquainted myself with some of his masterpieces but also the works of his contemporaries and those painters who influenced Frans Hals. I particularly liked the vivacity of this civic guard group portrait by Cornelis Corneliszoon van Haarlem (1562 – 11 November 1638). #haarlem #franshals #franshalsmuseum #oldmasters #oudemeesters #altemeister #maitresanciens #dutchgoldenage #goudeneeuw #slightlyworn.
