So honored that the College of Education's Outstanding Graduate named me her Most Valuable Professor! Awards given by students are truly special, and can be a reminder of why we do what we do. I'm sharing this honor today with all the badass professors I know who actively choose to teach, mentor, and support students every day, and especially with my late PhD advisor Leo Estrada, whose sense of authentic care is still one of the most powerful models of student-centered engagement I've ever experienced. ...

Five years ago, when I finished my coursework at William and Mary, I wasn’t able to participate in the convocation because my exit from undergrad was a hot mess - I messed up my graduation requirements and received my diploma two years after I was “done.” Today, I graduated from Teachers College with an M.A. in Higher and Postsecondary Education, the first person in my family to graduate from an Ivy League institution. .
In many ways, international students are very much like domestic first generation students. Even though my parents (who were bona fide first generation students) received higher education and made an upper-middle class life for me and my sister, their experiences, network, and cultural capital were of little help to me as I lived and studied in the US. Of course, I don’t deny that having money helped me significantly throughout my time as a student, but it would be a gross misconception to say I had it easy. American higher education continues to sideline and neglect international students during a neoliberal era that encourages social institutions (including higher ed) to engage international students for financial and human capital and little more. Today’s graduation was a wonderful reminder of what we, as higher ed professionals, can aspire towards and why so many of us felt the call to leverage our respective privileges to empower others and make higher education ever-more inclusive in all respects. .
Shout out to my family, friends, professors, and many others for making this happen for me @vicky_ 0130 @margaritarussolello@true_sehartz_fictions@noturmilf@gulturk 18 @boo_oonnie@andrewamistoso

🎓🎓 It's a wrap for the class of 2019! 🎓🎓
Yesterday, 962 graduates representing 50 countries received their degrees from @JohnsHopkinsSPH — the largest graduating class in the School's 103-year history, and exactly 100 years since the School graduated its first class in 1919. (That first class consisted of only one person!)
As Dean Ellen J. MacKenzie said when the ceremony began, "To today’s graduates, remember the legacy of the tens of thousands of @JHU_Alumni to come before you, but don’t dwell on the past. Have a plan that makes the future. The world needs you more than ever!"
