A year ago today, I made the best decision of my entire life: ditching alcohol for good. Since then, I have had the most eye opening and meaningful year. For the first time ever, I am TRULY MYSELF. I am finally LIVING. I am FREE

This year has showed me exactly what I am capable of... which turns out to be a whole hell of a lot of amazing sh*t. I AM SO PROUD OF MYSELF!

To celebrate, I have a new post up on the blog that is all about my sobriety journey  Specifically, what my life looked like before I ditched alcohol. Spoiler alert: it was terrifying. I choose to be vulnerable and share my story in hopes of reaching someone in need. Last year, that person was me.

Shame is the feeling that there is something basically wrong with you. The feeling of guilt is about doing something wrong, whereas shame is about being wrong at the core. The feeling of shame comes from the belief that,

拎杵 H A M E返 Shame is the feeling that there is something basically wrong with you. The feeling of guilt is about doing something wrong, whereas shame is about being wrong at the core. The feeling of shame comes from the belief that, "I am basically flawed, inadequate, wrong, bad, unimportant, undeserving or not good enough." . At some early point in our lives, most of us absorbed this false belief that causes the feeling of shame. As a result of not feeling seen, loved, valued and understood, we developed the belief that we were not being loved because there was something wrong with us. While some children were told outright that they were not okay -- that they were stupid, bad or undeserving -- other children concluded that there was something wrong with them by the way they were being treated. Oof! This can be so difficult! When we make a mistake, we have some options. We can go down a shame spiral of harsh criticism and self-judgment. We can make meaning out of the mistake and attribute it to ourselves (e.g., I made a stupid mistake therefore I am stupid). We can choose to extend ourselves compassion and respect (and even some self-soothing!). We can choose to learn something from that moment and apply that lesson moving forward. We can choose to reject the idea that making a mistake makes you a mistake.

I had to utilize this just this morning (hence what inspired this post). I made a mistake and the immediate thought was OMG! I am so stupid. In that moment, I had to choose to take a step back, take a breath, and thought challenge that sneaky yet automatic (and unhelpful) thought. Actually, making a mistake does not mean I am stupid. I am human and humans make mistakes. This is not meaningful. I will not judge myself for this.

This can sometimes be easier said than done. Good thing practice makes easier! I believe in your ability to change the way you speak to yourself.  I believe in YOU!

Its ok not to always be okay. 
Its okay to struggle and to not feel like yourself. You are not a failure. The hardest and most important thing to do is to accept the struggle, take care of yourself, and know it wont last forever.

I recently went through a low period and one of the most helpful things for me has been getting our into the sunshine and going for nature hikes. 喫 There is something so therapeutic about the sun, movement and nature sounds 儭

Find what works for you, and do that. But take care of yourself. Ask for help. You are not a burden 歹
