A chemical #synapse is a special junction between two #neurons that allows them to communicate without being physically connected. A synapse has several structures: The presynaptic #neuron ends in a small bulb called a presynaptic terminal, the postsynaptic terminal membrane is directly adjacent separated by a small space called a synaptic cleft.
An action potential causes voltage-gated calcium ion channels to open in the presynaptic terminal. The influence of calcium ions prompts synaptic #vesicles to release #neurotransmitters via #exocytosis. This neuron is releasing #acetylcholine. The #neurotransmitter quickly diffuses across the synaptic cleft to acetylcholine #molecules bind with one ligand gated sodium channel at the postsynaptic membrane opening the channel. Warfarin is an anticoagulant that treats or prevents blood clots, and thus lessens the risk of stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism. Sold as Coumadin among other names, it is one of the most affordable and important medications in the world. In the complex biology of blood clotting, various coagulation proteins must be activated by the "vitamin K cycle". Warfarin is an inhibitor of vitamin K epoxide reductase, an enzyme in this cycle, and thus slows down the clotting process. The proper dosage of warfarin varies greatly with individuals and with diet, so patients starting the medication must have their blood tested for several days to determine values called PT/INR (prothrombin time/international normalized ratio). Overdose of warfarin can lead to major bleeding, although other life threatening side effects are rare. The history of anticoagulants goes back to the 1920s, when it was noticed that livestock were bleeding to death after consuming hay from moldy clovers. By 1940, biochemist Karl Paul Link and his students at the University of Wisconsin identified the offending compound as dicoumarol, which arose from the natural product coumarin, but only in spoiled clovers. While dicoumarol was marketed as a drug, Link investigated more potent analogs as rodenticides, including warfarin (named from "Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation" and "coumarin"). Warfarin was approved as a rodenticide in 1948, but turned out superior to dicoumarol for medical uses as well. Vantablack was created by UK company Surrey NanoSystems, and the name refers to "vertically aligned nanotube arrays". The way that carbon nanotubes are grown on a substrate in a highly aligned manner causes light to become trapped in the molecular tubes and never escape. In the picture above with Vantablack grown on aluminum foil, the startling black void is equally as crinkled as the surrounding region. True Vantablack is very expensive to grow and cannot be painted or sprayed. However, there are several materials adopting the same brand name that can be painted or sprayed. They are made from non-aligned nanotubes (Vantablack S) or traditional solvent-based pigments (Vantablack VBx), and still absorb at least 99% of light. Batrachotoxin (BTX) is an extremely poisonous natural product of the steroidal alkaloid class. The name is derived from Greek "batrachos" meaning frog. It is found in high amounts in poison arrow frogs of the Phyllobates genus, which are native to Colombia and have a long history of being harvested by hunters to make their weapons instantly lethal. The compound is also accumulated in the pitohui birds of New Guinea. These animals do not synthesize batrachotoxin themselves, and are thought to acquire it from the insects they eat. Thus, frogs and birds that were bred in captivity are not poisonous. The chemical structure of batrachotoxin was solved in 1968 and a total synthesis accomplished in 1998. The mechanism of toxicity involves permanent binding to sodium channels, preventing nerve signal transduction and leading to paralysis and cardiac arrest. Batrachotoxin has a median lethal dose of 2 ug/kg (0.002 mg/kg) making it the second deadliest known non-protein substance (only beaten by maitotoxin), and there is no antidote.
