It's #SlimeMoldSunday again, my favorite day to post!  A day to show you all the beauty of the tiny world of slime molds.  Most slime molds are very very small, requiring a magnifying lens to see clearly, but this one is larger and can be seen with the naked eye.  It stops you in you tracks with its beautuful bright yellow color when in this immature stage.  It will quickly turn reddish brown, then dark brown, before drying out and releasing its spores.

What you see here is about 2cm tall.  I found a beautiful cluster of these, in different stages, and this grouping was I think the prettiest.  These are generally called Chocolate tube slime molds, genus Stemonitis. Microscopy is needed to identify the species (thanks to @sarah.lloyd.tasmania for that clarification). I found Stemonitis in this beautiful bright yellow color for the first time this past winter, and after my first sighting I was delighted to find several more.

Slime molds never cease to amaze me!

Hello and welcome to a full week of fungi here on unbiodiveristy hosted by @fascinatedbyfungi. Here we have some beautiful examples of Chanterelle biodiversity. Chanterelles are some of the most recognizable wild mushrooms, their vibrant color, meaty texture, and subtle flavor make them highly sought after choice edibles. Chanterelles can generally be recognized by their "decurrent" gills (running from the cap down onto the stem), lack of true gills, and white spores. Chanterelles grow in mycorrhizal association with a wide variety of trees (hardwoods and conifers) but have been virtually impossible to grow commercially. There are four genera of Chantrelles, Cantharellus, Craterellus, Gomphus, and Polyozellus. In this post I am presenting #Cantharellus (larger, solid, meaty) and #Craterellus (smaller, hollow, delicate texture). Pictures 1-2 are of the very dense #Cantharelluscalfornicus , 3 is the more spindly #Cantharellusformosus , 4 is the dense and delicious white #Cantharellussubalbidus , 5 is the almost iridescent #Cantharellusroseocanus , 6 is the ever delicious black trumpets or #Craterelluscalicornucopioides , 7 is the delicate buttery #Craterellustubaeformis . Then switching from west to east coast pic 8 is the sweet and delicious #Craterellusignicolor . The last two pictures are a mixture of uncharacterized Chanterelles from Massachusetts (except for the black trumpet which is #Craterellusfallax ). There are probably hundreds of species and subspecies of Chanterelles across the US, but many of them are misnamed with the European designation Cantharellus cibarus (a blanket name for all yellow chanties). Chanties are some of my favorite mushrooms to find and eat, it's amazing to sample and honor their diversity. Notable missing ones are the smooth chanterelle C. lateritius and C. cinnabarinus (definitely look them up, they are gorgeous). . . . . . . #mushrooms #fungi #mushroomphotography #mushroomsofinstagram #fungiphotography #mycology #biodiversity #wildfood #foraging #naturephotography #naturephotos #chanterelles #ediblemushrooms ...

Happy Saturday from this amazing sequence of #LionsMane or #Hericiumerinaceus. Hericium are white rot fungi that produce enzymes to break down the lignin which is what binds the cellulose fibers together and give wood it's structure. These saprophytic fungi prey on the heartwood of dead and dying Oaks here in the Napa Valley and Northern California. When young they can appear like beautiful coral colored anemones growing from dark wet wood. As they mature the spines elongate and they turn a bright white but slowly fade yellow to brown and crispy. They are choice edibles and are best when still bright white and tender. Due to their saprophytic nature they are easy to culture and kits can be purchased commercially to grow your own at home.
Like most mushrooms, Lions Mane contains beta-glucans (fungal polysaccharides) which can stimulate our immune systems and support a healthy microbiome. There is potential for Lions Mane to produce other bioactive compounds with anti-microbial/inflammatory/cancer, properties as well. According to recent papers (Vi M, et al. Int J Med Mushrooms. 2018.) and (Ofosu FK, et al. Int J Med Mushrooms. 2016.) the production of these compounds can be modulated by substrate composition and treatment during growth. Exciting world of fungal possibilities out there. Looking forward to more companies using fungus (other than yeast) as an expression system for drugs and bioactive compounds.
