From the mystical white hart sought by King Arthur, to Gwyn Ap Nudd, the horned lord of the Welsh Otherworld, deer have, since ancient times, been associated with the invisible world and the larger cosmic cycles, as seen with the stag’s shedding and renewal of its antlers each year. Deer were particularly sacred to the Irish druids, because out of all the animals, it was deer alone that could eat from the poisonous yew tree, known to the Druids as the Tree of Life. They also believed that deers, especially white deers, could pass with ease between the worlds. It has been proposed that a horned god, a well known example being Cernunnos, is perhaps one of the world’s earliest known gods. As “Lord of the Animals”, or “Lord of the Wild Things,” there is a shamanic element attributed to the hunt and the balance between humans and nature. One of the oldest antlered deities is the Sumerian Dara-Mah, meaning Great Stag, while in Britain, a long forgotten goddess, Elen of the Ways, is believed to find her roots in the Palaeolithic. She is old grandmother deer who knew the best pastures for the herd, and the pathways across the land. Later, Elen is glimpsed again in the Welsh Mabinogion as Empress Elen, associated with sovereignty and the fertility of the land.

Ragnar Loðbrók was a Norse warlord and a renowned hero of Norse history who lived in the 8-9th century. He was the king of Denmark and Sweden, was also known as Ragnar Sigurdsson as he was told to be Danish King Sigurd Hring’s son. Loðbrók means “hairy breeches” in the Old Norse language. The epithet is believed to be derived from the breeches he wore while fighting a poison-breathing serpent (or a dragon according to some accounts) in one of the sagas featuring Ragnar Loðbrók. He had 12 known sons; Björn Járnsíða, Ubba Ragnarsson, Ivar Ragnarsson, Sigurd Ragnarsson, Hvitserk Ragnarsson, Halfdan Ragnarsson, Regnald Ragnarsson, Eirik Ragnarsson, Fridleiv Ragnarsson, Dunyat Ragnarsson and Agnar Ragnarsson. He had three wives; Lagertha the Shieldmaiden,  Aslaug  the warrior queen and Thora Town-hart, a noblewoman who was the daughter of Earl Herrauðr of Götaland. It should also be noted that some accounts mention a fourth wife. He made successful raids on France, England and Baltic tribes. When he was on his way back home after he was forced out of  Paris, Ragnar’s ship washed ashore on the coast of the Kingdom of Northumbria. King Aella of Northumbria captured and threw Ragnar into a pit of snakes, leaving him to a painful and gruesome death.
What do you think of him?

Mjöllnir
The hammer was Thor’s primary weapon. Thor (Þórr) was the god of the storm, and thunder was experienced as being the sound of his hammer crashing down on his foes. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that the Old Norse name for his hammer, Mjöllnir, probably meant “Crusher.”

Just finishing up a batch of ceramic bird ladies.. these beauts and some crown faces are gonna go on sale tomorrow (Tuesday 10th) at 1pm UK time. So favorite my Etsy shop and set your timers if you are after one as they are likely to sell out fast!
•
Again I will say although I will do my best I can not promise that orders will definitely arrive before Christmas, so please note that if you are ordering from outside of the UK (particularly outside of the EU) then please be prepared as there is always a chance that it may be delayed at customs, and although it’s unlikely, it could possibly take up to several weeks to arrive. I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause.
•
Small packages are sent standard delivery (not tracked) in recycled paper packaging and should be small enough to fit through your letterbox.

Snorri Sturluson (1179 – 1241) was an Icelandic historian, poet, and politician. He was elected twice as lawspeaker to the Icelandic parliament, the Althing. He was the author of the Prose Edda or Younger Edda, which consists of Gylfaginning, a narrative of Norse mythology, the Skáldskaparmál, a book of poetic language, and the Háttatal, a list of verse forms. He was also the author of the Heimskringla, a history of the Norwegian kings that begins with legendary material in Ynglinga saga and moves through to early medieval Scandinavian history. For stylistic and methodological reasons, Snorri is often taken to be the author of Egil's saga.

I mean let’s be honest, who else would you rather learn about mythology from 😂
I picked up Norse Mythology at the beginning of the year but unfortunately haven’t yet had a chance to read it. I’ve been looking at Stephen Fry’s new book for a while now and on the weekend a friend gave me her copy to read. I’m super excited to get into both of them!
Anyone here read them?
It’ll sadly be a while before I get to them as I’m bogged down in award reading until the end of the month. .
