Today-I went to a progressive education conference that centered around neuroscience. A UCSF researcher presented some really amazing information. Some of the highlights affirmed what I knew about my brain and the brains of my students over the years. Some new beautiful insight was shared around memory and how as we age we loose our precision. Our recall lessens its quick availability and we are left searching for the memory and sometimes in a dual fit of anomia word loss we find ourselves unable to respond. Instead of seeing these moments of seeming non contribution we should re our understanding to note-that as we age we become more immersed in the present moment. Living through memory is less necessary. Conversation emerges from present moment awareness. Moments may or may not stay situated in your hippocampus.

This was an extremely ear shy horse. An excellent efficient and safe way of habituating the ears of a horse to be touched is through STIMULUS BLENDING. First make the horse used to a certain stimulus in this case the hair of a mop. Among my primary work roles writing is the one that comes the least natural to me is the most difficult and is the least rewarding in the moment. I think the last one is the key. When Im meeting with grad students teaching a class or contributing to jobZology I know in the moment when Im having an impact. Its less clear when Im writing. This was quite an insightful event. Little did I know the science of learning&mdashthe topic of my session&mdashwould be a central theme of the Harvard Dean&rsquos presentation. If we want to promote lifelong learning learners MUST be taught research-based strategies on how to learn study recall synthesize problem solve self-regulate set individualized learning objectives monitor their learning outcomes self-assess etc. all of which require purposeful deliberate practice. Oh and if I might add the success of the paradigm shift toward competency-based medical education hinges upon the science of learning and it&rsquos many implications for teaching and assessment.
