When a warning goes unheeded:
About an hour into the story,
the first dollop of tear rolled down.
You brushed it off hastily.
I pretended not to notice.
You had tried warning me the day before.
Rom-Coms make you emotional.
It may not be a good idea,
especially for a fourth date.
But I didn't take you seriously then.
Two hours into the movie,
to my utter horror and astonishment,
you were balling your eyes out.
Not knowing what to say or do,
I thrust the gift I had packed as a joke
into your unwilling hands. A handkerchief.
It contained a clumsy little note
I had written in blue fabric paint.
"When tears fall,
Or at your sneeze's call,
I'll be there for you,
the note read.
And amidst the snorts and tears,
snot and what not,
You cracked a smile,
that soon stretched into a watery grin.
You loved the gift that day,
my very first one to you.
And I think I fell a little bit in love,
for the very first time with you.
