When we know how to regulate our emotions, we can respond consciously instead of reacting impulsively. Pause before responding and ask yourself: "What is this feeling trying to tell me?" 🌟 👩‍🎨: @journey_to_wellness_ ...

I’m not a fan of the dismissive positivity. I’m here to be a human person...so that means all vibes are welcome.
.
In fact, I don’t think emotions are inherently positive or negative...it’s just our perspective. For me, emotions are messages from my body...and I believe in feeling the full spectrum of those emotions and paying attention to what they are trying to tell me.
.
For example anxiety is considered a “bad”/“negative” emotion. Yes, it’s uncomfortable. It can be paralyzing. It can feel like all-consuming dread and fear. AND when I step out of that emotion, I can also try to understand what it’s telling me.
.
If I’m feeling a lot of anxiety it’s usually because:
🔸 I’m ignoring, suppressing, or resisting my intuition/ intuitive guidance.
🔸 I’m pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone (a good thing but calls for a little extra gentleness and self care)
🔸 I’m trying too hard to control chaos and need to let go a little.
🔸 I’m scared of the unknown or of being vulnerable and need to tell myself that who I am is enough, will always be enough, and that it’s okay to ask for help.
🔸 I’m trying to do too much and I need to slow down and rest.
🔸 I’m too focused on what others need or might be thinking and I need to check in with my own needs.
🔸 I’m not eating well or enough. Food affects mood!
.
When you start to see emotions as information, FEELING becomes a lot more empowering.
.
So let’s stop dismissing a whole portion of our emotional experience and instead, just honor what we’re feeling..

Those who suffer from trauma carry shame.....from why can’t I “get over it”, to why did this happen to me, to why couldn’t I stop it. They don’t need any extra shame. External shaming prolongs the healing process and makes the already unbearable much worse. Let’s stand up and work as a community to stomp out the stigma of trauma. Let’s work together to help others heal. Let’s work together to heal depression and anxiety. Let’s work together to lower the suicide rate. You are the evidence of your healing abilities.

Facilitating growth & healing is a privilege that comes with huge responsibility - to heal yourself first so that you aren’t putting your pain on another. To always inquire & look for ways that you may cause harm or be operating + benefitting from patriarchal age of supremacy and othering.

Paul Selig said, “you can’t be the light and put another in darkness.” Words that resound for me when I act from my wound. #notestomyself [Heal yourself to heal others. Not the other way around.].

As we continue to explore and learn about psychological trauma, we often emphasize the recognition and treatment of PTSD. This, of course, is incredibly important. But, in order to work toward policy and practices that protect against the development of PTSD, we need to explore the factors that contribute to Post-Traumatic Growth. -

Survivors of trauma experience Post-Traumatic Growth about as frequently as they do Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In Post-Traumatic Growth, survivors transform and experience an increased capacity to feel compassion and connect with others, find meaning in life, see more options, radically accept themselves, and feel grounded in their personal strength. -

Research shows there are two main factors that contribute to the experience of Post-Traumatic Growth: (1) low levels of stress leading up to the traumatic event; and (2) having a safe and trusted person to connect with after the traumatic event. -

Many of us experience extremely high levels of stress, and do not have a safe person readily available. In order to develop a society that is more protected against PTSD, we have to make stress-reduction practices (mindfulness, exercise, nutrition) more widely available, and work towards emphasizing community and connection with others..

In honor of the start to #mentalhealthawarenessmonth, there is a lot of discussion about mental health conditions, and it is important to discuss mental health, reduce stigma, and advocate for access to mental health support for all.
.
But it is important to me to communicate that there is so much more to you than any diagnoses you do or do not have. And if you have a diagnosis, what I care most about is understanding what is underneath that.
.
What has your life story been? What traumas have you experienced? What were the earliest messages you learned about yourself? What did you learn to do with your emotions? What forms of coping were modeled for you? What does your relationship with food look like? What makes it hard to sleep at night? What forms of prejudice and aggression have you lived with? Who have your supports been? What are the ways you learned to adapt and survive? What do you value? What brings you a sense of purpose and meaning? What motivates you?
.
These are the kinds of questions that interest me and actually give me useful information in how we can move forward in your healing.
.
Whether you happen to report one of the 227 possible combinations of symptoms that meet criteria for major depressive disorder, while still important for certain purposes, is just one part of the picture.

How do you behave when your alert system is screaming code red?⁣
⁣
Pay close attention to how you are responding to certain situations lately. Notice the sensations in your body. ⁣
⁣
Are your defences up? Do you find yourself 'clapping back' to things you wouldn't normally give a second thought to. These are signs you may be in a toxic environment. ⁣
⁣
Toxicity is insidious and chips away at your self esteem altering your personality and making you feel completely out of sorts. What's more it isn't limited exclusively to romantic relationships. ⁣
⁣

Our body’s ability to respond adaptively to threats is actually a gift; but when we don’t have the support or ability to allow the response to process—this is when something overwhelming becomes “stuck.”
🌿
I’m thinking about this as it’s a heavy day here in Colorado. We’re processing a harrowing 20 hours where a woman made credible threats of violence against our schools + the majority of schools were closed today. The threat has passed, but sadly the woman ended her own life.
🌿
As we try to process this, it reminds me that the messages our body gives us are incredibly important. They tell us what we (or sometimes our kiddos/partner/friend) need to actually metabolize the scary experience. Sometimes it’s movement or hugs or crying or running; but it’s there if we listen.
🌿
Today, as we are looking for ways to process and move through this disturbing event, I am reminded how much we all matter. Be kind out there. #therapistthoughts

To be seen, fully seen as who you are in this moment can be a scary idea,
but when some safe can hold space for you in that way, there’s nothing better than that.

And you are worthy of that, full stop!!
