CONSIDERATION IS NOT A WEAKNESS
Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood”
The above is Habit #5 (out of 7) in Steven Covey’s book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. We humans are (when we feel like it) pretty dang good at this habit...the ability to grasp what’s going on in the minds of others.
Our ability to process both obvious & subtle cues in order to grasp the mental state of others such as their thoughts, feelings & beliefs to predict what they are thinking, is a significant difference between “us” & other animals scampering about this planet. Psychologists call this “theory of mind”. When we interact with others, it’s impossible for us to know exactly what they’re thinking or feeling so we have to construct a “theory” of what’s swirling about in their heads. Without theory of mind, social interaction would be pretty much impossible. Think of the instances in your daily life when you have to construct a theory on what’s going on in the mind of someone else.
Theory of mind is what allows humans to cooperate effectively & why we are the dominant species on Earth...it is why we stepped on the Moon before the chimpanzees! But here is the thing...while we have this ability to understand the minds of our colleagues, that ability is still subject to biases this often screws up our perception. When we fail to understand, a whole host of problems crop up: couples squabble, children feel estranged from parents, toxic work cultures evolve, & countries even fire rockets at each other.
If there is one word (& habit) I have learned (the hard way)...it is CONSIDERATION. What goes hand in hand with Consideration is the ability to apply the handbrake to our tongues and open the doors to our ears.
We have all been on the receiving end of the cringey acronym ‘LOL’ in texts (Laugh Out Loud)...there is also a similar but very rarely used acronym - ‘LAL’ - LISTEN AND LEARN. ...
